Gaston County is conveniently located west of Charlotte and is easily accessible from I-85, I-77, I-485, as well as Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. The Catawba River and Mecklenburg County bound the east side of the county, Cleveland County falls to the west, Lincoln County is to the north, and York County, South Carolina, borders the south side. There are 15 incorporated towns and Gastonia is the county seat.
Close to the metro Charlotte area, Gaston County offers all the amenities and conveniences of a large city, but has retained a small town feel. The cost of living is low and has made this county a magnet for thousands of new residents and businesses in recent years.
There are an abundance of recreational activities within Gaston County, including many lakes and rivers, Crowders Mountain State Park, a Revolutionary memorial park, Cherryville Heritage Park, Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden (one of the nation's Top 20 gardens), Schiele Museum of Natural History & Planetarium, Gaston County Museum of Art & History, Carolina Harley Davidson Museum, Brevard Station Museum, American Military Museum, Cherryville Historical Museum, Piedmont Carolina Railroad Museum, Grier Beam Truck Museum, Advanced Technology Center, and Lineberger Maple Springs Farm. McAddenville's Christmastown USA draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year for its annual Christmas lights display.
Gaston College, Belmont Abbey College and the North Carolina Vocational Textile School also call Gaston County home. Gaston County has also long been known for its fish camps and barbeque restaurants and visitors come from near and afar to enjoy them.
