Centrally located along the northern border of South Carolina, Lancaster is 39 miles south of Uptown Charlotte, 50 miles north of Columbia, SC, three hours from the North Carolina mountains, two hours from the shores of Myrtle Beach, SC, conveniently located off Hwy 521, and within easy access of I-77 and I-485. If you need to fly, you can choose from the Lancaster County Municipal Airport, with one of the longest non-commercial runways in the region, or take an easy drive to the Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

Lancaster County is comprised of three incorporated communities: Lancaster, Kershaw, and Heath Springs, as well as a number of smaller areas within the county. Over the past few years, the population has grown significantly due to the county's quality of life, low cost of living and accessibility. While the textile industry remains the mainstay of this county, new businesses and industries are making Lancaster County their home every day.

Lancaster County is rich in history and abounds with landmarks of historical significance. It boasts over 20 sites in the National Register of Historic Places, as well as two national landmarks: the Lancaster County Courthouse and the old Lancaster County jail.

The Lancaster community offers a variety of cultural and historical opportunities, including Lancaster and Chester Railroad Museum, Lancaster County Council of the Arts, Lancaster Art League, Marian Hagins Memorial Art Show, Lancaster County Community Playhouse, Lancaster Chamber Choir, Ralph Waldrop's murals, and Lancaster's Wall of Fame.


Carolina Legends, a bluegrass, celtic and old-time country festival is held in May each year and is a fun-filled day of picking and fiddling. Lancaster County is home to the University of South Carolina (Lancaster), a regional campus of the University of South Carolina (USC).

Lancaster County's boundaries include the Lynches River, Catawba River and nearby Lake Wateree State Park; boating and fishing are popular recreational activities. There are numerous parks, including: Andrew Jackson State Park, a 260-acre park with a museum and one-room schoolhouse, amphitheater, camping and picnic areas, nature trail, playground and a seven-acre fishing lake with rental fishing boats.

Be sure to visit the Forty Acre Rock / Flat Creek Natural Area, a geological phenomenon that is designated as a national natural landmark.

Hunters come from all over to take advantage of the 29,295 acres in Wildlife Management Areas, hunting deer, wild turkey, dove, quail and other game.

Others enjoy the Carolina Motorsports Park Inc. or the Lancaster Speedway, known as the fastest half-mile dirt track in the Southeast. It is the site of Saturday night races and two Go-Kart tracks.

If flying is your passion, the Bermuda High Soaring School, Inc., one of the largest commercial soaring centers in America, offers a unique recreational opportunity--sailplane soaring. Bermuda High offers training and instructional rides in its two-seated tandem gliders.
